COLLEGE SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : Moorpark Looks Like a Pretender, Not a Contender

Share

This was supposed to be Moorpark College’s year to finally put together a strong baseball team.

Second-year Coach Ron Stillwell was coming off a .500 season in 1985 and had a good crop of freshman recruits. Things aren’t working out the way he planned, however.

Moorpark’s 4-3 loss to Butte in the second round of the West L.A. tournament Tuesday dropped the Raiders to 8-7 on the season and reinforced Stillwell’s belief that they have a long way to go before they are to become legitimate contenders.

“We’re lacking a lot of the things it takes to beat the good ballclubs right now, I’ll tell you that,” he said. “Our defense is pretty good, but our hitting leaves quite a bit to be desired. We really need someone to clutch up.”

It didn’t happen against Butte.

The Raiders quickly led, 3-0, but allowed Butte to scratch back before Charlie Brousseau singled in the winning run in the 10th. Brousseau was 4 for 5 on the day.

First baseman Eric Fischer was 2 for 5 for the Raiders and it was his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, that gave them a 3-0 lead in the sixth.

Concordia 14, Cal Lutheran 9--Cal Lutheran gave up five runs in the 10th inning and lost to Concordia College of Oregon in a nonconference baseball game at Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran led, 8-2, after six innings, but Concordia scored twice in the seventh, four times in the eighth and once in the ninth to make the score 9-9.

Dan Meltregger, who came on to relieve Kingsmen starter Dan Pastor in the top of the eighth, took the loss.

Kevin Wynn and Jay Knight each went 3 for 5 for Cal Lutheran, while first baseman Ed Howard hit his fifth home run. The loss dropped Cal Lutheran’s record to 11-6 overall. It was Concordia’s first win after eight losses.

Westmont 8, The Master’s 1; Westmont 9, The Master’s 2--The Mustangs, who had won seven of their last eight and three in a row, managed only seven hits in the two NAIA District 3 games at Westmont.

The Master’s fell to 10-14 overall and 4-7 in the district. Westmont is 10-9 and 5-1.
