College Baseball : USD Uses Six-Run Fifth Inning to Overcome Chapman Lead

The University of San Diego scored six runs in the fifth inning Wednesday to erase a 6-1 deficit, and the Toreros went on to defeat Chapman College, 12-6, in a nonconference baseball game played in San Diego.

David Rolls hit a home run and John Slots drove in the go-ahead run for the Toreros. San Diego had five hits in the inning.

The Panthers (8-17) were led by Mike Cruz, who went 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI.

In other college baseball action:

Southern California College 10-5, West Coast Christian 6-1--Ron Nelson had four hits and two RBIs in two games to lead the Vanguards to the nonconference sweep in Costa Mesa. Robert Mansfield pitched a complete-game, five-hitter and struck out six in the second game for the Vanguards (15-8).

In community college action:

Golden West 6, L.A. Harbor 5 (12 innings)--Darrin Thomasick singled with two out in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Rustlers to the nonconference win at Golden West. Scott Rath singled, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run.

Todd Nash went 3 for 6 and knocked in the tying run in the ninth inning. Rath added three hits. Dean Douty, who pitched two scoreless innings, was the winner.

Orange Coast College 16, Southwestern 1 (five innings)--Joey James went 4 for 4 with four RBIs to lead the Pirates to an easy win over the Apaches in the championship game of the Orange Coast College tournament. The game was cut short because the Pirates had a 10-run lead after the fifth inning.

Brett Weber, Dave Staton, Ralph Ramirez and Mark Rasmussen each added two hits for Orange Coast (18-4), and Sam August pitched four innings to earn the victory.

Rancho Santiago College 18, Moorpark 2--Bob Brucato had four hits, four RBIs and scored three runs to help the Dons (15-4) to the win in the third round of the West L.A. College tournament.

Chris Shiflett allowed two hits and struck out seven in five innings to earn the win. Steve Scarsone added three hits, including two doubles, drove in two runs and scored four more. Brent Reese had two doubles and four RBIs.
