Huntington Beach : Majority of Golden West Students Seek Degrees

Golden West College has 14,636 students attending classes during the current spring semester, and 62% are working towards a college degree, a statistical analysis of current enrollment has shown.

The college said that of the 9,209 students working for a degree, 68% plan to transfer to a University of California or California State University campus to obtain a bachelor’s degree; 9% plan to transfer to a private or out-of-state university, and the remaining 23% are working for an associate degree in either a vocational or a general educational program. Community colleges award associate degrees.

Of the students not working towards a degree, 4.5% are enrolled in vocational certificate programs, 8.5% are taking courses to improve their current job skills and 25% are attending classes for personal enrichment.

The breakdown of spring enrollment showed that slightly more than half the students, 7,594, are female. A total of 4,908 students, or about one third of the enrollment, attend night classes and 9,728 attend day classes.

The 10 top majors at the college are business administration, engineering, nursing, liberal arts, administration of justice, cosmetology, computer science, accounting, psychology and recording arts technology.
