Placentia : City Joins Growing Number of Uninsured

Share

Placentia recently joined the ranks of a growing number of Orange County cities without insurance.

The city’s insurer, Harbor Insurance Co., got out of the business of providing coverage for municipalities and dropped Placentia effective March 16.

Fullerton, which had the same insurer, has been without insurance since Tuesday.

Both cities plan to rely on their own resources to cover any claims. Placentia set $105,000 aside and may set aside an additional $105,000 next year to either pay for claims or for premiums should the insurance market open up, Finance Director Frank Dunnavant said.

Meanwhile, officials will look at the option of joining a pool of other cities facing the same dilemma. Villa Park, for example, joined the Southern California Joint Powers Insurance Authority, which includes about 50 Southern California cities.

Placentia is “very claim-free,” Dunnavant said. Those claims filed have been for amounts ranging from $3,000 to $4,000, he said.
