Black Panther Party co-founder Huey Newton must answer to 33 felony counts of destroying public records and embezzling state funds, Alameda County prosecutors said. Newton allegedly took $67,000 designated for the Oakland Community Learning Center, which closed in 1982. He was arrested in April, after attempting to cash a $42,000 check made out to the Educational Opportunities Corp., a nonprofit organization run by the Black Panthers. State investigators said the $42,000 state grant was fraudulently obtained by inflating the number of children enrolled in the east Oakland school. Newton is free on $25,000 bail pending a May 9 court appearance.
