Workers at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant shut down the Unit 2 reactor because of problems with a cooling system, a spokesman said. The action was prompted by leaks in a condenser, which is outside of the nuclear reactor system, said George Sarkisian, spokesman for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. The condenser is part of a heat-exchange system used to cool steam generated by the nuclear power plant near San Luis Obispo. The steam drives turbines, which generate electricity. Sarkisian said it would take a few days to repair the condenser and bring Unit 2 back up to power.
