A Fremont judge has imposed a curfew on a 21-year-old man who was charged as an “accessory after the fact” in the murder of a Japanese exchange student. Originally charged with murder, Kevin Lee McGuffey’s charges were reduced when it was learned that he was not present when Junko (Jane) Owaki, 18, was robbed of $2,000 and fatally stabbed Feb. 18. But Deputy Alameda County Dist. Atty. Lisa Faria said McGuffey received some of the stolen money and helped hide the murder weapon. Saying he did not want McGuffey “out alone with his friends” at night, Municipal Court Judge Roy G. Pucci ordered McGuffey to remain inside his family’s home from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. Bail was set at $13,250. Two juveniles have been charged with the murder, while a third youth has been charged as an accessory.
