Jerry Paris, whose deftness as a slapstick director brought success to two “Police Academy” films and whose touch for light comedy won him an Emmy for “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” died today of a brain tumor. He was 60.

A spokesman at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center said that the brain tumor was discovered after Paris entered the hospital on March 18 and that he had undergone two operations since. Paris’ acting credits included “The Caine Mutiny” and “Marty.” He also appeared on the Van Dyke show as next-door neighbor Jerry Helper, a dentist. He won a 1964 Emmy as best director for his work on the show.
