The Metropolitan Transportation Authority today announced that it is removing the coin-operated lockers in Grand Central Terminal where hundreds of homeless people store their belongings.

The agency paid $66,400 to cancel the contract with American Locker Co., which maintained the lockers, after officials of the Metro-North commuter railroad expressed concern about security at the terminal. The lockers, which cost 50 cents to operate, are frequently used for storage by homeless men and women seeking refuge in the terminal.
