USC Handles UCI in Men’s Tennis

The USC men’s tennis team, ranked third in the country at 19-5, defeated 19th-ranked UC Irvine, 7-2, Wednesday at USC.

The Anteaters’ top player, Bruce Man Son Hing was defeated by the No. 1 collegiate player in the nation, Rick Leach, 6-3, 6-4. But UCI (14-9) won the No. 2 singles, as Julian Barham defeated Scott Brownsberger, 6-2, 7-5.

The Anteaters’ only other triumph came in the No. 3 doubles. Darren Yates and Mike Downs beat John Simerson and Rick Kepler. The other Anteaters lost five tiebreakers.

“It was like going to Vegas and spending 12 hours and not winning one hand of blackjack,” said Anteater Coach Greg Patton. “That’s sort of been the story of our last three weeks--if we get into a tiebreaker, I start moaning.”
