Melvin B. Lane has been named chairman of Lane Publishing Co., Menlo Park, and publisher of Sunset magazine, which has been owned by the family since 1928. Lane succeeds his brother, L.W. Lane Jr., who is now the U.S. ambassador to Australia.

Melvin Lane was the first chairman of the California Coastal Commission, appointed in 1972 by then-Gov. Ronald Reagan. He is chairman of the Sierra Club National Advisory Committee and chairman of the California Fund for the Environment. He serves as a director on the boards of Lucky Stores and Pacific Gas & Electric and is a trustee of Stanford University.
