College Baseball : Casian Pitches One-Hitter for Fullerton

Junior left-hander Larry Casian pitched a one-hitter for Cal State Fullerton Friday night, as the Titans defeated UC Irvine, 9-0, in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball action in Fullerton.

Casian had a perfect game through six innings, but second baseman Ed Clark opened the seventh with a check-swing bouncer over the mound and beat the throw to first. It was the only Anteater hit of the game.

The only other UCI runner was designated hitter Brad Milner, who walked in the eighth with two outs.

Casian, 4-1 on the season and 4-0 since moving into the starting rotation on March 15, had 10 strikeouts.

He was 0-3 with a 9.76 earned-run average last season in eight games after suffering arm problems in the fall of 1984.

Irvine starter Doug Linton faced six hitters, and didn’t get any out in the bottom of the first.

The first six Titans scored to give Fullerton (4-3, 25-13) a 6-0 lead after one inning.

Pat Garman doubled to the fence in left-center to drive in the first run. Catcher John Eccles followed with a two-run single, to give Fullerton a 3-0 lead.

Dann Howitt drove in the fourth run with a double that also chased Linton.

Irvine (2-5, 12-17-2) and Fullerton meet today and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Titan Field.

In other college action:

UC Riverside 6, Chapman 0--Highlanders’ pitcher Frank Potestio had a no-hitter for 6 innings in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at Hart Park in Orange. Potestio allowed only two runners to reach base in the first seven innings. The Panthers (5-7, 13-22) finished with three hits. David Finley hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Mike Williams hit a two-run homer in the seventh. UC Riverside is 5-4 and 18-14.

UCLA 13, USC 10--Steve Hisey and Bill Haselman each hit three-run homers and Steve Stowell added a two-run homer to lead UCLA to a 13-10 victory over Southern Cal in a Pacific-10 Conference Southern Division game.

The Bruins scored three runs in the first inning and seven in the second en route to raising their record to 9-5 in conference, 24-15 overall.

UCLA starter Alex Sanchez (11-1) struck out 13 batters in 7 innings. Southern Cal starter Brad Brink (8-4) was tagged for six runs before leaving after three batters in the second inning.
