Conservationists climbed into the branches of several redwoods near Guerneville and vowed to stay there until officials agreed to spare 22 of the trees from the ax of the California Transportation Department. The redwoods are scheduled to be cleared for a new California 116 intersection leading to a 88-unit condominium development along the Russian River. The demonstrators said they oppose cutting the tall timber because the route is soon to be designated a state scenic highway.
