NCAA Upholds Ruling That Chana Perry Is Ineligible to Play at Northeast Louisiana

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The NCAA Council has upheld the decision by the Infractions Committee to declare basketball player Chana Perry ineligible for the women’s team at Northeast Louisiana University, NCAA President Jack Davis said Wednesday.
Contacted in Monroe, La., Northeast Louisiana President Dwight Vines and Athletic Director Benny Hollis said the school would not pursue the matter further.
In January, the NCAA made Northeast Louisiana the first women’s program to receive a public penalty in connection with the recruitment of Perry, a 6-foot 4-inch sophomore forward from Mississippi.
In addition to ruling Perry ineligible, the NCAA also made Northeast’s women ineligible for post-season play and forbade Coach Linda Harper from recruiting off-campus for one year.
The sanctions were the harshest imposed on a women’s program.
Hollis said that Perry was still enrolled at the school. He also said that Iowa and San Diego State both had contacted Northeast about Perry’s availability.
