Ground-breaking ceremonies were held Thursday for a 10-story, 150,000-square-foot addition to Palomar Memorial Hospital.

The $20-million tower will house the hospital’s open-heart surgery unit, an emergency room, operating rooms, intensive care units, a pharmacy, delivery rooms and other departments.

The addition is scheduled to be completed by June, 1989, and is being done in conjunction with the remodeling of existing facilities, hospital administrator Robert J. Harenski said.
