Greg Louganis and Michele Mitchell won the three-meter springboard finals in the U.S. Diving Indoor championships Saturday.

Louganis, undefeated in the event since 1981, scored 695.22 points in bringing his record collection of national titles to 37. Mark Bradshaw, the 1983 NCAA champion, was runner-up to Louganis for the third consecutive national meet with 678.84. Ron Meyer, the 1985 NCAA champion on both the one- and three-meter boards, took third with 661.59.

“I felt good,” said Louganis, 26, who qualified for the final despite receiving a zero score for a failed dive in Friday’s preliminaries. “All I had to do was take one dive at a time. It helped me to concentrate on one dive at a time.”

Mitchell, who like Louganis will be a finalist today when the meet ends at the Indiana University Natatorium with platform competition, compiled 505.65 points for her 10 dives to claim her sixth national championship.

Tristan Baker, a junior at Brigham Young, was second with 491.55. Kelly McCormick, the defending champion who was seeking her eighth national crown, was third with 479.67. Megen Neyer, a former world champion on the three-meter board, was fourth with 473.64.

The top two in each event here earn a trip to the Goodwill Games, while the top eight gain positions on the U.S. National team and a chance to qualify for this year’s world championships in Spain.
