Lee Roy Selmon, a 10-year veteran who missed the entire 1985 NFL season because of a lower back problem, retired rather than undergo surgery that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers figured would help him recover and play again.
A six-time Pro Bowl selection and the first draft choice of the expansion Buccaneers in 1976, Selmon was injured in the Pro Bowl game Jan. 27, 1985.
