Orange County’s Democratic celebrity of the week was Jody Powell, former press secretary to President Jimmy Carter and now a syndicated newspaper columnist.
He had come to deliver the kickoff speech at Chapman College’s forum on “Media and Politics,” but at a press conference the main questioning concerned Libya.
“I don’t have any question in my mind that we were justified in hitting Libya, particularly since . . . the degree that they have targeted Americans and American interests is too obvious to be ignored,” Powell said. “Whether it was the wise thing to do, as well as justifiable, I’m not sure at this point.”
It is paradoxical that Carter’s long diplomatic work to free American hostages taken from the embassy in Iran resulted in no loss of life, yet was politically catastrophic, Powell said.
“Life, as somebody said, is not always fair,” Powell concluded.
