George Scruggs, a running back who redshirted last season at Alabama, was killed, and two other Crimson Tide players were injured when their car went out of control on a Huntsville, Ala., highway, police said.
“It’s a devastating thing,” Alabama Coach Ray Perkins said. “I don’t know what else to say except it’s a great tragedy. He was certainly a fine young man who had a bright future at Alabama. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
Vernon Wilkinson, a starting defensive back for the Crimson Tide last season, was listed in critical condition at a Huntsville hospital. Marvin Humphries, who dropped off the football team before the 1985 season, and Frederick Shackleford, the driver of the car, were still undergoing treatment in the emergency room. They were both listed in stable condition.
