College Baseball : Fullerton Gets 18 Hits in Win Over San Jose St.
Cal State Fullerton got 18 hits and a strong pitching performance from Mike Harkey Saturday in a 10-3 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. win at San Jose State.
Harkey (8-6) scattered seven hits for his sixth complete game of the season, tops on the staff.
Fullerton (8-6, 31-17) scored a run in the first inning when John Eccles’ double drove in Jef Garcia from first base. It was Eccles’ 26th career double setting a Fullerton record.
Several Titans had good days offensively. Designated hitter Keith Watkins was 3 for 5 with a triple and one RBI for Fullerton. Third baseman Pat Garman was also was 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs.
In other PCAA action:
Pacific 1, UC Irvine 0--Joe Ortiz walked, stole second and scored on an overthrow by Irvine catcher Don Nicholson for the game’s only run. Randy Ralstin (4-5) allowed eight hits to earn the win. UC Irvine is 5-9, 16-22-2. Pacific is 5-9, 20-21.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 7-6, Chapman 3-8--Chapman’s Jeff Morrison went 3 for 3 and scored two runs in the second game to give Chapman (10-12, 18-26) a split at San Luis Obispo.
In Western Christian Athletic Assn. action:
West Coast Christian 8, Christ College Irvine 6--Tim Basgall’s two-run double sparked a five-run sixth inning for West Coast Christian (10-0, 17-13) at Irvine.
In NAIA District 3 action:
Southern California College 10-6, Westmont 2-5--Second baseman Dean Harvey and shortstop Kevin Caspar each had RBIs in both games to lead the Vanguards (12-5, 30-13) to a sweep of Westmont (8-9, 19-20) at home.
Harvey was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the first game and had an RBI double in the second. Caspar had a two-run triple in the first game and and a RBI double in the second.
