The Abu Nidal Palestinian guerrilla group said today that it killed Briton Paul Appleby in Arab East Jerusalem in reprisal for the British-backed U.S. bombing of Libya.

The claim came in a typewritten statement delivered to a foreign news agency in Beirut and signed by Abu Nidal’s Fatah Revolutionary Council.

“The group of martyr Monzer Kadry in Jerusalem has carried out the death sentence on a member of British intelligence while he was on an intelligence mission,” it said.

Palestinian sources in Beirut said Kadry must have been an Abu Nidal supporter killed in action, but they had no specific information about him.

Appleby, a tourist from Bristol in southwest England, was shot dead at point-blank range Sunday at the Garden Tomb, revered as the burial place of Jesus.
