Fountain Valley : City’s ‘Run for the Roses’ to Aid Youth Programs

Share

Mint juleps and racing won’t be confined to the Kentucky Derby this Saturday.

Orange County racers can perform their own “Run for the Roses” in Mile Square Park while the thoroughbreds do the same at Louisville’s Churchill Downs in the famed horse race. A series of three races will be held to raise cash for a planned sports camp for handicapped children to be called “Whe Cha Pines,” as well as for the athletic programs at Los Amigos and Fountain Valley high schools.

The event, which attracted about 200 runners when it debuted last year, offers entrants in the 10-kilometer portion a first prize of a trip for two to San Francisco and entry in that city’s Bay-to-Breakers race. Runners competing in the 5-kilometer race will compete for a trip for two to Caesars Palace in Lake Tahoe.

Information and entry forms can be obtained at Silky Sullivan’s restaurant, 10201 Slater Ave., or by calling (714) 964-3272. Entry fees are $10 (including a “Run for the Roses” T-shirt) and $2 for a “fun run” matching the Derby course at a mile and a quarter. Runners registering after Wednesday will have to pay an additional $2. The race begins at Heil Avenue and Brookhurst Street.
