A Tijuana man was killed and another man was seriously injured by lawmen during a robbery attempt just north of the international border, a San Diego police spokesman said Monday.

Jose Manuel Peralta Camacho, said to be from Tijuana and in his early 20s, died at the scene, according to San Diego Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson. The other man was flown to Mercy Hospital by Life Flight helicopter and was said to be in serious condition. His name was not released.

Robinson said that, about 8:50 p.m. Sunday, a four-man unit of the border crimes task force was on foot patrol on Otay Mesa Road, about a quarter of a mile east of the port of entry, when they saw Peralta Camacho and the other man attempting to rob two Mexicans. When Peralta Camacho and the other man turned around and saw the officers approaching, they began waving guns at the officers, who immediately opened fire on them, Robinson said.
