The St. Louis Cardinals snapped a seven-game losing streak Monday, and Manager Whitey Herzog said the reason was simple.

“When Vince Coleman gets on base we score runs,” Herzog said after the Cardinals outlasted the Giants, 5-4, in 12 innings at San Francisco. “When we were losing, he wasn’t getting on base.”

Coleman did more than just get on base. He had three hits, scored two runs, stole two bases and also drove home the winning run.

Jerry White delivered a sacrifice fly and Coleman drove home the winner in the top of the 12th for the victory.

With the score tied, 3-3, Terry Pendleton led off the 12th with a single off Mark Davis (1-1). Davis mishandled Tom Lawless’ bunt, moving Pendleton to second. Ozzie Smith sacrificed both runners, and White’s fly to right scored Pendleton and sent Lawless to third. Lawless scored on Coleman’s infield single.

Todd Worrell (1-1) allowed two hits over 2 innings. Reliever Greg Barger walked two batters with one out in the 12th before being replaced by Pat Perry, who earned his first save. Perry recorded the last two outs, finally retiring Dan Gladden on a fly ball after loading the bases by walking Joel Youngblood.

Chicago 4, San Diego 3--Bob Dernier drove in three runs, one on an eighth-inning homer, and then two on a ninth-inning double, to give the Cubs a victory at San Diego.

San Diego led, 3-1, in the eighth when Dernier hit his first home run to trim the lead to 3-2.

In the ninth, Keith Moreland led off with a single against reliever Rich Gossage, and Jody Davis singled one out later. Gossage struck out Steve Christmas, but Dernier lashed his double to the center-field fence, scoring both runners and pinning the loss on Gossage (2-1).
