May is Neighborhood Watch Month in California, and San Diego will kick off the month with a series of television commercials geared toward encouraging participation in Neighborhood Watch programs, a police spokeswoman said.

The state Office of Criminal Justice Planning has designated the month and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the San Diego Police Department, police agencies from surrounding cities and officers from Camp Pendleton all will cooperate to bring this message to the community: Unity between citizens and law enforcement agencies will increase their ability to fight crime, Sgt. Anne O’Dell said.

“We can’t have eyes and ears everywhere, but they can,” O’Dell said, adding that the seven commercials, which will begin airing Monday, were produced by the San Diego Police Department.

There also will be a countywide Neighborhood Watch rally at Horton Plaza on May 18, with law enforcement and alarm displays, and information.
