Monterey County supervisors extended until next March their ban on such genetically altered bacteria as Frostban, whose use was stopped there earlier this year. Residents raised objections to Frostban and the possible dangers connected with its use when an Oakland firm, Advanced Genetic Sciences, won state and federal permission to test the bacteria on a Castroville strawberry field. The state Department of Food and Agriculture contends such substances are not subject to local control. Frostban is intended to protect crops from frost.
