Saugus 9, Quartz Hill 7--Don Pedersen was 2 for 2 with a home run and three runs batted in as Saugus clinched a tie for the Golden League championship at Quartz Hill.

Saugus (11-2, 15-6 overall) leads second-place Quartz Hill (9-4, 12-5) by two games with two to play. Saugus finished third last season after winning the league title in 1984.

Saugus led after five innings, 6-5, and put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Pedersen singled home Brett Paola and John Meyers. Pedersen advanced to second on the play and scored on Chris Joy’s single.

Joy (2-1) pitched the first four innings to get the win. Kent Gustaveson pitched the final three innings for his second save. Gustaveson was 2 for 3 with a triple.

Simi Valley 7, Westlake 0--Scott Radinsky pitched his fourth one-hitter and struck out 11 to lead Marmonte League champion Simi Valley.

In 69 innings, Radinsky, a senior left-hander, has allowed only 25 hits and struck out 131. The shutout, his fourth, improved his record to 10-1 and lowered his earned-run average to 0.80.

Shaun Murphy of Simi Valley was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, giving him 30 for the season and 77 in his two varsity seasons. Duane Mulville also was 2 for 3.

Simi Valley is 21-3 and has won 14 straight. This is the fifth time in seven years Simi Valley has won at least 20 games.

Newbury Park 13, Royal 2--Tim Bohling was 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs as Newbury Park remained in contention for a playoff spot in the Marmonte League with the win at its home field.

Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks trail third-place Royal by one game with two games left. Simi Valley and Camarillo have clinched the first two spots.

Newbury Park was also led by Wally Thornhill, who was 3 for 3. Glenn Evans went the distance and improved his record to 6-5.

Chaminade 14, Cathedral 0--Dave Morrison drove in four runs and Pablo Flores, Terry Siciliano and Peter Dunn each had two hits to lead Chaminade to the win at home.

Dunn and Pat Kelly combined to pitch a two-hitter for Chaminade.

Bell-Jeff 6, St. Genevieve 3--Tom Ressler was 3 for 3 and drove in three runs to lead Bell-Jeff.

Ressler (1-3), a junior right-hander, allowed one earned run and four hits to pick up the win. Fernando Guana was 3 for 4 and Petar Vucurevic and Jeff Miljanich each had two hits for Bell-Jeff. St. Genevieve was led by Jeff de la Cruz, who had two doubles and two RBIs.

Bell-Jeff scored four runs in the first as St. Genevieve starter Mike Rohrbough was unable to retire any of the five batters he faced.

Hart 8, Alhambra 5--Tim Nedin hit two doubles and a triple and drove in three runs to lead Hart.

The win kept Hart (7-6 in league) within a game of Schurr and San Gabriel, which are tied with 8-5 records for second place in the Foothill League. Alhambra (11-2) has clinched the league championship with two games left.

Nedin, a senior left-hander, struck out six and picked up the win. David Lee had two RBIs for Hart.

San Gabriel 8, Burroughs (B) 7--Mike Bruse was 2 for 4 including a three-run homer in the seventh inning but Burroughs still came up short in the Foothill League game.

Chon Sanchez was 2 for 4 with three stolen bases, while Bobby Niers was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Burroughs (2-11).

San Gabriel (8-5) scored three unearned runs in the first inning thanks to four Burroughs errors. Pete Leal increased San Gabriel’s lead to 5-1 with a two-run homer in the third inning.

Montclair Prep 16, La Verne Lutheran 0--Scott Randall pitched his first shutout of the season to lead Montclair Prep to its fifth straight win.

Randall, a senior left-hander, struck out nine and improved his record to 6-1. The win allowed Montclair Prep to maintain its one-game lead in the Alpha League.

Frank Charles of Montclair Prep had five RBIs and hit his sixth home run of the season. Reggie Smith, Jeff Wright, Darrell Handelsman and Curtis Minks each had two hits.

Village Christian 9, L.A. Lutheran 4--Senior right-hander Mike Beliveau (3-2) struck out 10 in 6 innings to lead Village Christian to the win.

Village Christian also was led by Royce Farrar, Kevin Ebenhoch and Tyler Victor, who each had two hits. John Lite was 2 for 4 with a home run for L.A. Lutheran.

Thacher 3, Simi Lutheran 1--Right-hander Mike Hernandez pitched a three-hitter and struck out 13 to lead Thacher in the nonleague game. Bernardo Sanchez (4-3) allowed only four hits but suffered the loss.

Jonathan Doering drove in Simi Lutheran’s run with a single in the sixth.

Queen of Angels 5, Rio Hondo Prep 3--Freshman right-hander Erik Russell (2-2) struck out 12 to lead Queen of Angels in the nonleague game at Rio Hondo Prep.

Queen of Angels broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh when Emilio Gomez singled home Joe Hernandez, who had doubled. Gomez stole second and scored on Russell’s single.

Providence 13, Brentwood 9--Jeff Cirillo was 3 for 4, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead Providence (7-0, 17-3 overall) to the win and the Delphic League title. Cirillo had three RBIs.

Rich Campus was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, while Kevin Miller was 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Providence.

Oak Park 7, Carpinteria 4--Oak Park scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Oak Park (3-7, 6-12 overall) has won two of its last three games.

John Cole was 3 for 3 and scored twice for Oak Park. Darrin Lloyd was 2 for 3 and scored two runs, while Chris Hall was 2 for 2 with two RBIs for Oak Park.

Harvard 7, Centennial 1--Centennial pitchers walked 14 Harvard batters. Two runs scored on walks and another on a balk. Harvard (5-3 in the Pioneer League, 11-6 overall) scored two more runs on four Centennial errors.

Jimmy Ardell’s bunt single in the fifth was Harvard’s only hit. Harvard pitcher Andy Snett (2-3) tossed a two-hitter, striking out seven.

Alemany 8, Crespi 0--Sophomore pitcher Brian Rosselli threw a three-hitter to lead Alemany to the Del Rey League win. Alemany (16-8 overall, 7-3 in league) collected 12 walks from three Crespi pitchers. Alemany scored three runs on wild pitches.

Bill Horvath was 2 for 4 for Alemany.

Canyon 13, Antelope Valley 3--Gary Morgan was 3 for 4 and hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to lead Canyon. Jay Kerschner, Charlie Gerard and Ernie Figueroa collected three hits each as the Cowboys won their fifth game in their last six outings.

Pitcher Travis Regnolds (5-2) went the distance, allowing seven hits to get the win for Canyon (10-11 overall, 6-7 in league).

High School Softball

Viewpoint 17, Temple Christian 4--Liesl Dano was 5 for 6, including a grand slam and a three-run triple to lead a 23-hit attack for Viewpoint. Dano, a catcher, had eight RBIs.

Kim Fields pitched a complete game and allowed six hits and struck out four.

JC Swimming

Pierce College is in 13th place, 56 1/2 points behind leader Diablo Valley, after two days of the community college swimming and diving championships at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.

Norm Skorge led Pierce with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 50.83. The mark was a personal best for the freshman from Washington.

Brent Hermanson placed 10th in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:25.0. His twin brother, Brad, was 10th in the 100-yard backstroke at 56.2.

The Hermansons also teamed with Dave Utter and Brooks Ayola to give Pierce an 11th-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

High School Track

Burroughs (B) 65, Hart 62--Both teams entered Thursday’s meet with 4-0 records. With the win, Burroughs claimed the Foothill League championship.
