A man working as a doctor at a walk-in clinic made a major mistake when he applied for a medical license renewal under a retired doctor’s name.

State investigators arrested Enrique Herrera, 36, last week on suspicion of posing as a physician after they said they found that he was applying for a medical license renewal under another name.

Herrera had worked at Emergi-Care Family Center in Santa Ana for nearly 1 1/2 years, using the identity and credentials of retired Oxnard physician Alvin J. Stewart and performing minor surgery on patients, authorities said.

No patients had complained about Herrera, but “it’s very serious because you don’t know what he’s not going to spot,” said Ken Wagstaff, director of the Board of Medical Quality Assurance.

Herrera was booked on suspicion of practicing medicine without a license, a felony, and was being held at Orange County Jail on $100,000 bail.
