$1,533,286 Wagered on Derby Sets Hollywood Park Single-Race Record

Hollywood Park set a single-race record with a total pool of $1,533,286 wagered on the Kentucky Derby Saturday.

The figure surpassed the mark of $1,230,317 set by betting on the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Classic in 1984.

At Hollywood Park, Ferdinand paid $16.80, $7.40 and $5.40; runner-up Bold Arrangement returned $9.40 and $6.80, and Broad Brush paid $11.40. The $5 exacta pool paid $363 for the winning 1-3 combination.

Bettors at Churchill Downs sent record amounts of money through the pari-mutuel windows.

The $6,165,119 bet on the Derby far surpassed the 1985 record of $5,770,074, and the day’s 10-race total of $13,114,331 set a single day’s record for North American tracks.

The previous one-day record of $12,611,415 was set at Santa Anita in March 1984.

Off the track, there were 56 locations nationally that took bets totaling $19,776,332 on the Derby. Both of those figures were records.
