Faced with too many routes and too few trucks, the Indio Post Office has decided to take a bold step backward--to bicycles. For the first time in 21 years, letter carriers will soon pedal partway through their appointed rounds, riding from the post office to the start of their routes, then shouldering a 40-pound sack of mail to complete their deliveries. The return to pedal power probably could not come at a worse time for mail carriers in Indio. Summertime temperatures in the southern desert community soar to 120 degrees, and carriers start at 6 a.m. to beat the heat.
