Smith Defends Title Against Arredondo
Lonnie Smith, the World Boxing Council junior-welterweight champion, is again scheduled to defend his title against Mexican Rene Arredondo tonight at the Olympic Auditorium.
Injuries to both boxers and Smith’s legal disputes with advisers and promoters forced five postponements of the bout.
Arredondo, originally from Apatzingan, near Mexico City, but now living in Los Angeles, has 32 knockouts in 34 wins, with 2 losses, and is rated as the No. 1 contender by the WBC. Smith, from Denver, is 23-0-1, with 10 knockouts.
Smith is guaranteed $100,000, Arredondo $10,000.
On the undercard, which begins at 8 p.m., Pomona’s Alberto Davila will fight Francis Childs of Philadelphia, and Negro Bejines of Guadalajara will take on Bazooka Limon of Mexico City.
The main event will begin about 9:15 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m.
