An old slag heap at the bottom of Monterey Harbor is the source of lead contamination in mussels. The Water Resources Control Board said a $50,000 study linked the remains of the decades-old slag to the problem. Researchers recommended sampling other organisms to determine its extent in the food chain and also suggested looking into the feasibility of a cleanup. In another report, the board said DDT is slowly being released into the aquatic environment of the Salinas Valley from soils that have absorbed it for 40 years.
