Arrest in Officer’s Wife’s Death

Fullerton homicide detectives said today they have arrested an 18-year-old transient in connection with the slaying of the wife of a Los Angeles police officer. Police arrested Scott Michael Katzin after questioning him Tuesday night about the death of Marie Andrea Malmgreen, 38, whose body was found wrapped in a blanket in her 1981 Cadillac near the Cal State Fullerton campus on April 29.

Malmgreen, of Brea, was the wife of Russell Malmgreen, an aide to Police Chief Daryl F. Gates. She disappeared the week before her body was found, after dropping her children off at school. Authorities have not disclosed how the woman died. Brea Police Capt. Don Bankhead said the transient was arrested because “some of his answers didn’t make sense.”
