Local News in Brief : Agoura Hills Taxi Service to Expand

Share

Asuccessful dial-a-ride taxi program launched a year ago by Agoura Hills may soon double in size by spreading outside the city’s limits.

The Agoura Hills City Council on Tuesday night unanimously approved an agreement with Los Angeles County to allow cabs under contract to the city and subsidized by it to offer 50-cent rides to residents of the unincorporated neighborhoods of Saratoga Hills, Seminole Springs, Malibu Lake and Triunfo-Lobo Canyon.

In return, the county will pay half the cost of reserving a second Thousand Oaks Cab Co. taxi for the Agoura Hills dial-a-ride service.

City Manager Michael Huse said the county approached Agoura Hills with the expansion plan. He said the dial-a-ride service has become so popular in eight-square-mile Agoura Hills that the city is required to use a second cab about 50 hours a month.

The city subsidy, which comes from Agoura Hills’ Proposition A tax funds, amounts to $2.44 a passenger.

City officials said the expanded door-to-door service will start June 16, pending ratification of the agreement by county supervisors.

The dial-a-ride concept seems to have caught on in communities in the area. Last week, Westlake Village began a three-month trial of a dial-a-ride service for residents of its 5 1/2 square miles.

That program, which charges $1 a ride, also uses Thousand Oaks Cab Co. taxis.
