It Isn’t Really Love Unless You Stay and Play

Share

I question the quality and depth of the love for USC professed by Bo and Hank.

I was, from February, 1948 to June, 1951, a walk-on, nonscholarship athlete who earned two letters in cross-country and two in track. I made no demand at coaching change time--from Cromwell to Hill to Mortenson. I ran what I was told when I was told by whomever I was told. During my freshman season, I strained an Achilles’ tendon and missed enough practice that my locker was emptied. When I could run again, I bought my own gear and changed in a “john” until my desire was evident and I got my school issue and locker back.

To run my senior season of track, I arranged to get an incomplete in a required course during the fall semester to avoid compulsory graduation in February.

The experience described is not noteworthy except by comparison with those members of the “singing group” who played for Stan Morrison last season. If you love a school, you stay and play; if you don’t, you quit!
