UNRAVELED ROMANCE

“RUN.” The Windbreakers. DB. The band’s name notwithstanding, the Windbreakers’ new record arrives like a cool, refreshing breeze. The personnel fluctuates, but longtime Windbreakers producer and fan Mitch Easter has again helped out with the playing and producing on “Run.” Many of the songs address unraveled romance with a different perspective--and could slide neatly into a college radio set with R.E.M., 10,000 Maniacs, 28th Day and Zeitgeist, although the Windbreakers pound the Mersey Beat a bit more than those bands. The Mississippi group also incorporates subtle touches of psychedelia, but has no paisley pretensions. With music this charming, playful and witty, you wonder why they didn’t try to come up with a better name. Maybe they mean jackets.
