Harvey Glance beat Olympic champion Carl Lewis rather handily in the 100-meter dash, and Larry Myricks got off a wind-aided long jump of 28-0 3/4 Saturday in the S&W; Modesto Invitational track and field meet at Modesto College.

The 29-year-old Glance, a two-time Olympian, beat Lewis in the 100 for the first time since 1981. He won in 10.07 seconds, best time in the world this year, but it was disallowed as an official mark because of a wind slightly over the legal limit.

During a calm moment on the breezy day, Carol Lewis set a meet record by winning the women’s long jump in 21-7. She went a quarter-inch over the record set by Martha Watson in 1975.

Willie Banks, the world record-holder in the triple jump, also found a calm moment to set a meet record of 56-7 1/2. He held the old mark of 56-2

Ralph Boston’s 21-year-old meet record of 27-5 in the long jump survived because Myricks was aided by a wind of 2.21 meters per second, more than the allowable 2 m.p.s.

Myricks is one of four athletes in history who has recorded a legal 28-foot long jump. Carl Lewis, another of the four, did not compete in the event Saturday.

Lewis had a poor start in the 100 and needed a strong finish to salvage second in 10.15.

“The start was difficult,” Lewis said. “There were a lot of people moving around there, and the starter held us up a long time. But I’ve made up for those kinds of starts before. I just didn’t have the tenacity I’ve had here before.”

Lewis has broken 10 seconds twice at Modesto, including a 9.97 in 1983, the meet record.

Other winners Saturday included Olympic champion Roger Kingdom in the 110-meter high hurdles in 13.48 and American record-holder Henry Marsh in the 3,000 steeplechase in 8:48.6.

In the women’s 100-meter dash, Pam Marshall broke 11 seconds for the first time, but her winning time of 10.98 also was wind-aided.
