Chapman Begins Title Defense in NCAA Tennis Tourney Today

UC Davis is the top-seeded team in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division 2 tennis tournament, which begins today at Cal State Northridge. UC Davis (18-3) will play the University of Tennessee at Martin (19-7) at 12:30 pm. Also at 12:30, No. 2-seeded Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (17-8) will play Steven F. Austin College (15-6).

Chapman College will begin defense of its 1985 title with a match against No. 4-seeded Rollins College at 9 a.m. Rollins is coming into the tournament with a record of 15-6. Chapman is 20-12. Chapman beat Rollins in the second round of the tournament last year, 5-1.

No. 3-seeded Hampton University (25-4) will play Valdosta State (18-5) at 9 a.m.

The tournament will continue with semifinals on Tuesday and with a consolation final and final match on Wednesday.

Rollins Coach Norm Copeland has taken a team to the national tennis tournament every year since 1970. His streak of 17 straight tournaments is the longest current streak. Second to him, with seven straight national tournament teams, is Chapman Coach Mike Edles, who had Cal State Bakersfield in the tournament three straight years before moving to Chapman four years ago.
