Seahawks Sign Sean Salisbury as a Free Agent

USC quarterback Sean Salisbury, overlooked in the NFL draft, was signed as a free agent by the Seattle Seahawks Monday.

“I couldn’t be happier the way things worked out,” Salisbury said from Seattle Monday night. “But I was sure miserable on draft day.

“I’m not naive enough to have thought I was going to get drafted high, but everybody kept telling I’d get drafted somewhere. So I was really down.

“I think I’m better off in my situation now than if I’d been drafted in the later rounds. Say, for example, I’d been drafted by New Orleans, I’d be competing against three veteran quarterbacks, David Wilson, Bobby Hebert and Richard Todd. No way would I have a chance to make the team.”

Seattle has two veteran quarterbacks, Dave Krieg and Gale Gilbert, and will have three rookies vying for the third spot--Salisbury, UCLA’s David Norrie, drafted on the 11th round, and Portland State’s Terry Summerfield, another free agent.

“We’re all being given the same opportunity to make the team,” Salisbury said. “I’m sure feeling a lot better about things than I was on draft day.”
