Redondo Beach : Public Summer Swimming

Share

Swimming pools at Redondo and Mira Costa high schools will be open to the public for 10 weeks this summer as part of a test the city is conducting to evaluate the need for a proposed city-owned swimming pool at the former Aviation High School.

Despite concerns raised by Mayor Barbara Doerr, the City Council this week allocated $45,000 to pay for staff and equipment at the two pools, which will be open daily, except Sundays, from 1 to 6 p.m. from June 23 to Aug. 29.

Doerr said she supports the experiment but is concerned that the city is paying for a pool located outside the city. Mira Costa is in Manhattan Beach.

Robert Atkinson, director of parks and recreation, said the Mira Costa pool is convenient for residents of North Redondo Beach, where two-thirds of the city’s residents live.
