A surprising 35 persons applied for the West San Fernando Valley seat on the Los Angeles Board of Education that became vacant after the resignation of David Armor, school district officials announced Wednesday.

The crowded field was led by former school board member Tom Bartman. Bartman, whose decision last year not to run opened up the field for Armor’s election, is considered by some district officials to be the favorite to win the board appointment.

Last week, board members unanimously decided to appoint someone to fill the seat until the next regular school board election in June, 1987, instead of holding a special election. The board is scheduled to begin reviewing the applications Monday. The applications came from almost three times as many candidates as ran for the seat in last year’s election.

George St. Johns, administrative aide to state Sen. Ed Davis (R-Valencia), and Barbara Romey, an Armor confidante who was active in the fight to keep open Prairie Street School in Northridge, had previously announced that they would apply.
