Dynamite Scare Shakes Up Sunland School
A report of dynamite aboard a camper parked near a Sunland school caused a lot of anxiety Thursday, but the report turned out to be erroneous, police said.
The owner of the camper, Howard John Bymark, 42, was arrested about 7:30 p.m. on suspicion of falsely reporting possession of explosives, Officer Richard Dulgerian said.
The Los Angeles police bomb squad responded about 2 p.m. to a report that there was dynamite in the camper, Lt. Dan Cooke said. The camper, which had been converted from a school bus, was parked a half-block from Mt. Gleason Junior High School.
The school’s approximately 1,800 students were dismissed at 3 p.m., as they normally would be, and escorted through an exit away from where the vehicle was parked, school district spokesman Pat Spencer said. After-school activities and afternoon adult classes were canceled, Spencer said.
Several nearby homes were evacuated but a search of the camper turned up no explosives, Cooke said.
