4 Skin Cancer Clinics Offered

Free skin-cancer screening programs are being sponsored this month throughout Orange County by the American Cancer Society.

Often caused by the sun’s harmful rays, skin cancer attacks one in seven Americans. The incidence of malignant melanoma, the most serious form of the disease, is increasing at a faster rate than all other types of cancer except lung cancer in women, according to an ACS spokesman.

The 10-minute test will check for suspicious moles, blemishes or sores. Dermatologists also will explain and encourage regular self-examination. Here is the schedule of screenings:

- Cabrillo Park, corner of Cabrillo Park Drive and Fruit Street in Santa Ana, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in conjunction with the Southern California Gas Co. and Southern California Edison Co. ballgame.

- UCI Medical Center, 101 The City Drive in Orange, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 27.

- Placentia-Linda Community Hospital, 1301 N. Rose Drive in Placentia, from 4 to 7 p.m. May 28.

- Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 31.
