An Irvine teen-ager remained hospitalized from injuries she sustained in the explosion of a homemade pipe bomb. Irvine police said the girl and a teen-age boy were injured Tuesday when they tried to pick up the device--a pipe stuffed with black powder and a fuse--and it exploded. Sgt. Richard Bowman said the bomb, placed in a residential drainage pipe, appeared to have been intended “for vandalism, not to injure anyone.” The girl remained hospitalized at Western Medical Center. Police said her injuries, though serious, do not appear to be life-threatening. The boy was treated and released. Neither of the teen-agers, said to be 14 and 15, were identified. A 16-year-old Northwood boy, also unidentified, was arrested for manufacture and detonation of the pipe bomb and later released to the custody of his parents.
