Frank White hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, giving the Kansas City Royals a 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians Thursday night at Kansas City.

The victory was the fourth straight for the Royals and put them at the .500 mark. They trail the first-place Angels by only 1 1/2 games.

The grand slam, White’s third home run of the season, was his fifth career grand slam. The towering shot, just inside the left-field foul pole, allowed Dennis Leonard to improve to 4-3. Bud Black pitched the ninth in relief of Leonard to earn his first major league save.

Chicago 8, New York 1--Greg Walker, playing his second game after missing a month with a hairline wrist fracture, hit a three-run homer as the resurgent Chicago White Sox won at New York.

The White Sox, who have won five of seven games since Manager Tony LaRussa was given a vote of confidence last week, jumped on Ron Guidry (4-2) for seven runs and eight hits in the first five innings.

Carlton Fisk had two singles and a double to support Neil Allen (1-0), who was traded by the Yankees to Chicago in February. Allen allowed four hits, walked two and struck out three in seven innings, then was replaced by Bill Dawley.

Texas 8, Detroit 1--The Rangers had lost two straight after their 19-2 victory over Cleveland Monday night. But now they appear to be back in the grove. Don Slaught drove in five runs with a triple and a homer, and rookie Pete Incaviglia added a two-run homer in the victory at Detroit.

Baltimore 5, Minnesota 3--Juan Beniquez and Mike Young both hit their first home runs of the season as the Orioles won at Baltimore.
