Long Beach : Beach Path Hearing Set

Share

A public hearing on a 3.1-mile bicycle and pedestrian path on the beach is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council chambers.

The proposed 17-foot-wide path would link Alamitos Avenue with 54th Place, and have two bicycle lanes and a pedestrian walkway. On the west end, the path would connect with the Shoreline Aquatic Park Bike Trail. On the east, it would eventually be linked to the San Gabriel River Bike Trail by a surface-street bike path.

Location of the path is likely to be an issue at the hearing. Maintaining an adequate beachfront and not infringing on the privacy of people who live in beach homes was a major concern during a City Council discussion Tuesday, and of Matthew Sloan, chairman of the citizen advisory committee that is planning the path.

City officials expect to fund the project with state and county grants.
