Weather Will Cooperate for Long Weekend

Southern California’s Memorial Day weekend should be sunny and a little warmer--just about perfect for picnics, hikes, backyard barbecues, sailing, strolls in the park, beach outings and almost anything else--the National Weather Service said Thursday.

There probably will be some night and morning coastal clouds throughout the weekend, but the high-level storm system that drew a gray layer over the Southland and brought strong winds to the deserts moved east of the Rockies on Thursday.

Higher pressure developing aloft means above-normal daytime temperatures and less extensive coastal low clouds.

The Los Angeles Civic Center should have a high temperature near 84 degrees today. Highs will probably range from 82 to 86 during the weekend.

The Civic Center high on Thursday was 77 after an overnight low of 57. Relative humidity ranged from 39% to 83%.

Weekend temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s in the inland valleys.

As for the recreation areas over the weekend, the beaches should have highs in the 70s and Southern California mountains should have readings from 68 to 78. In the southern deserts, highs may reach 105 degrees. In the northern deserts, they may reach the upper 90s.

Boaters will find light variable winds offshore through tonight. Surfers can look for 2-to-3-foot surf at most Southland beaches today and Saturday. Along Santa Monica Bay, breakers will be 1 to 3 feet.

Air quality unhealthful for everybody was predicted for today in the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Air unhealthful for sensitive people is expected in the Riverside-San Bernardino area, in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys and in the Hemet-Elsinore area.
