Arcaro, 70, Has Heart Surgery
Former jockey Eddie Arcaro, 70, underwent two open-heart surgical procedures simultaneously and remained in serious condition in intensive care at a Miami hospital, doctors said.
A team of doctors operated for about six hours late Friday to clean one clogged artery and bypass another that was nearly closed.
Arcaro was expected to remain in intensive care for up to three days. Doctors said it was too early to tell whether Arcaro would recover completely.
Arcaro, who won the Kentucky Derby a record-tying five times before his retirement in 1962, rode nearly 5,000 winners.
In 1970, Arcaro underwent surgery to bypass two other arteries. He later had two other arteries unclogged.
