Coryell Observes Defensive Players

San Diego Charger Coach Don Coryell spent most of his time observing defensive players Saturday, the second day of this weekend’s mini-camp at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. The camp will conclude with a workout this morning. The full squad will convene next weekend for another mini-camp.

Coryell, reluctant to name players who caught his eye, mentioned defensive linemen Leslie O’Neal and Terry Unrein, the club’s top two defensive selections in the draft. Coryell said he principally is trying to evaluate the athletic ability of new defensive personnel.

“You won’t see me trying to act important by coaching individual defensive players,” he said. “The best way to foul up a player is to have different coaches telling a guy what to do. I’ll encourage or get mad, but I won’t do individual coaching. I just care about seeing that a guy gets good coaching (from position coaches).”
