Canela Stops Long in 8th Round at Irvine
Felipe Canela won the vacant State welterweight title after scoring a technical knockout at 2:05 of the eighth round of a scheduled 12-round bout against Alfonso Long at the Irvine Marriott Hotel Tuesday night.
Canela, of Colton, held the title in 1983 and reclaimed it after Long’s handlers threw in the towel when Long complained of not being able to see due to an open cut over his eye. The bout was stopped at that point and Canela was awarded the TKO.
